THE government of Zimbabwe is set to re-open the country’s airports as efforts to support the tourism sector gather momentum.
The tourism sector had suffered an unprecedented setback following the outbreak this year of the deadly global Covid-19 pandemic.
Air Zimbabwe had ceased operations since the outbreak of the coronavirus, with all domestic, regional and international flights being suspended towards the end of March.
Cargo carrier flights, however, remained operational as regional and international trade continued almost unabated.
Speaking at a post-Cabinent briefing, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said government was in the process of regularising the opening up of both domestic, regional and international passenger flights.
“Government is (now) finalising on modalities for the re-opening of airports to support the resumption of the tourism sector,” Mutsvangwa said.
“The plan is to start with the resumption of domestic flights and then move to (regional) international flights.
“Cabinet approved the resumption of the rest of tourism operations, including boat operations,” she added.
