Eastern Cape police are on the search for a group of heavily armed individuals after six community patrollers were fatally shot in an ambush near Qumbu over the weekend. At least four other people sustained injuries in the attack.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, eight suspects, armed with rifles and handguns, launched the attack on the patrollers at Lugongozo Junior Secondary School in Tina Falls, near Qumbu.
“Six victims were killed, and four others were rushed to the hospital,” Nkohli stated.

The patrollers had gathered at the school, preparing for their evening rounds when the armed group opened fire. The suspects are still at large, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene condemned the attack, expressing concern for the safety of those assisting law enforcement. “We have mobilized all available resources to ensure the perpetrators of this mass shooting are brought to justice,” said Mene. “We condemn this tragic incident and extend our condolences to the families of the deceased. We also wish a swift recovery to those injured.”
This mass shooting follows a recent wave of violence in the region, including a shooting in Lusikisiki where 18 people were killed at two homesteads. Three suspects linked to that incident are set to appear in court soon.
