Bus Fire Kills Seven Bernard Mizeki Pilgrims

On Sunday, a bus carrying pilgrims from the Bernard Mizeki shrine caught fire and killed seven people.

Reverend Father Edwin Selemani, who oversees the National Shrines, stated that 14 other people were taken to the hospital, three of whom are in critical condition.

The annual pilgrimage to the Bernard Mizeki shrine in Marondera brings together Anglicans from Zimbabwe and surrounding areas.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident on their official X page, stating:

“We will be releasing information on a road traffic accident that occurred last night on 16/06/24. A bus carrying pilgrims from Bernard Mizeki caught fire near Gandanzara, Rusape.”

More details about the accident and the injured will be shared by the authorities soon.

In another story, A sad incident occurred near Esigodini on Sunday morning, where a school bus carrying Falcon College students overturned. Aidan O’Donovan, an upper six student, tragically lost his life in the accident.

He was returning from a rugby tournament at St George’s College in Harare with 55 other students.

The bus flipped over on a road known as ‘Danger,’ about 20 kilometers away from the school. Social media pictures showed the bus on its side. Another student, Bradley Wentzel, suffered a broken arm and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo for treatment.

Phillip Whaley, the chairman of Falcon College’s board of governors, expressed deep sadness over the incident. “It is with deepest sadness that I inform you of the passing of Aidan Aidan O’Donovan in the bus accident today. There are no words to express our sorrow.”

Whaley mentioned that a chartered flight was arranged for Aidan’s parents to come to Bulawayo. He asked everyone to keep the Aidan O’Donovan family in their thoughts during this tough time.

Aside from Bradley Wentzel’s injury, a few other students and staff suffered minor cuts and injuries. They are also receiving care at Mater Dei Hospital.

Whaley assured that Headmaster Mr. Kirkman would give more updates soon. He invited those who want to send condolences to the O’Donovan family and Mr. Kirkman to email admissions@falconcollege.com and pa@falconcollege.com.

The Falcon College community is deeply saddened by this tragedy, and they are working to support everyone involved.
