The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, initially set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025. The decision comes just 18 days before the tournament’s original start date.
On January 14, CAF shared that while infrastructure development in the three host countries has made significant progress, more time is required to ensure the facilities meet the necessary standards for the event.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Presidents of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, acknowledging their leadership and the substantial progress made in preparing the venues.
He also praised the ongoing construction and renovation of key infrastructures, including stadiums, training fields, hotels, and medical facilities, and expressed optimism that they would meet CAF’s requirements by August 2025. Motsepe remarked:
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their strong leadership and commitment to the development of the infrastructure necessary to host a successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2024.”
“I am very impressed with the progress of construction and the renovations underway across the three countries. I am confident that by August 2025, the facilities, including stadiums, training grounds, hotels, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure, will meet CAF’s standards, ensuring the success of CHAN 2024.”
The draw for CHAN 2024 will take place in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, at 8 PM. The precise dates for the tournament in August 2025 will be revealed in the future.
The qualified teams for the 2024 tournament include Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda (the co-hosts), as well as Angola, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, DR Congo, Guinea, Madagascar, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Zambia.
