Freeman Chari, a United States-based Zimbabwean opposition activist, has criticized former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa for personalizing the movement with his approach of “Strategic Ambiguity.”
Chari argued that when the CCC was first created, there was a collective agreement on the importance of having a clear constitution and organizational structure. However, he claims that the concept of Strategic Ambiguity eventually took priority over these foundational principles.
In a post on X, Chari explained:
“When CCC was founded, I had discussions with Chamisa and a few others, where we agreed to support him publicly but to also provide honest feedback privately to avoid repeating the mistakes of MDC-Alliance. A key part of our focus was creating a solid constitution, which included clearly defined roles and a structural framework. I also contributed to a document on alternative structures, which I worked on with Dr. Magaisa. Unfortunately, Strategic Ambiguity became the dominant force.”

Chari went on to criticize how certain individuals, particularly from Harare, who had initially supported Chamisa privately, abandoned him after the elections. He expressed frustration over the lack of a clear strategy, which, in his view, weakened the movement’s ability to defend itself and led to missed opportunities.
The activist also lamented the lack of accountability within the CCC, especially in the aftermath of the elections, and pointed to the failure to address fundamental organizational issues. Chari expressed concern that without introspection and a willingness to address these issues, the movement would continue to face setbacks and challenges. He made it clear that he was not willing to endure further disappointments.
