Mnangagwa Commissions 220 Housing Units and 54 Vehicles for Zimbabwe Defence Forces

On Wednesday, December 4, President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially inaugurated 220 housing units as part of the Dzivaresekwa and Imbizo Barracks Institutional Accommodation Project, alongside the handover of 54 utility vehicles for members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).

During the ceremony, Mnangagwa emphasized that the new facilities were a token of Zimbabwe’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by the country’s armed forces. He remarked, “Providing decent housing and secure working environments are crucial for enabling our forces to focus on their primary role in the modernization, industrialization, and growth of our economy.”

The President further announced that a total of 8,430 housing units would be constructed as part of the ongoing Dzivaresekwa and Imbizo Barracks projects.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga highlighted that the 54 vehicles handed over would significantly improve mobility for the ZDF, addressing both operational and administrative needs. Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri also noted that the vehicles would help ease the transport difficulties faced by the military.

However, former CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere criticized Mnangagwa for focusing on ceremonial activities such as ribbon-cutting and groundbreaking events instead of prioritizing policy development and effective governance. She questioned, “Is it the role of the head of government to open a block of flats? How much time is being spent in office to develop policy and govern? Does every day have to involve ribbon-cutting and groundbreaking ceremonies?”

Mahere also expressed concerns over Zimbabwe’s ongoing crises, including a significant national debt, a weak economy, soaring inflation, poor public health and education systems, widespread poverty, and other critical issues facing the country.
