President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the tragic Beitbridge road accident that claimed 24 lives a national disaster, pledging government support for the affected families.
The fatal crash occurred yesterday morning on the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway, near Lutumba Tollgate, approximately 25km from Beitbridge Town. An Urban Connect bus collided head-on with an Auro Transport haulage truck, resulting in 17 fatalities on the spot, while seven others succumbed to their injuries at Beitbridge District Hospital.
In a statement, Mnangagwa conveyed his deep sorrow over the incident.
“The loss of our fellow citizens in this devastating accident is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. We must take urgent steps to prevent such tragedies from recurring,” he said.
He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and called on law enforcement agencies to intensify road safety efforts.
“As a nation, we cannot afford to continue losing lives to preventable accidents. All relevant authorities must act decisively to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations,” he added.
Mnangagwa announced that the government would provide state-assisted burials for the deceased and support for the injured.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families mourning their loved ones. To those receiving treatment, I wish you a speedy recovery,” he said.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Urban Connect bus was overtaking another vehicle near the tollgate when it collided with the haulage truck, which was pulling out of the checkpoint.
Dr. Lenos Samhere, Beitbridge’s District Medical Officer, confirmed that 53 people sustained injuries, with 10 in critical condition. Some of the critically injured were transferred to Gwanda Provincial Hospital for specialized care.
Emergency responders, including police, local motorists, and the Beitbridge Civil Protection Unit, coordinated rescue efforts.

Witnesses described the aftermath as harrowing. Mr. Thomas Nhundu, an undertaker, said bodies were scattered across the road, and survivors were in distress.
“The scene was horrifying. We helped retrieve trapped victims and transported the injured to the hospital,” he said.
Another witness, Mr. Leonard Wanderson, rushed to the site after hearing the crash.
“I saw people lying lifeless on the road. We tried to assist the injured while waiting for emergency services,” he recalled.
