Muchato Cuthbert, a 49-year-old Gweru resident, was given a six-month prison sentence for setting fire to his neighbor’s apartment while looking for honey.
If he returns $850 to the complainant, the entire sentence will be suspended.
Cuthbert, who lives at 226 Mtapa Section 3, Gweru, entered a guilty plea to the charge on Friday in front of Gweru magistrate Nixon Mangoti.
Cuthbert observed several bees at his neighbor’s house on March 16, the court heard, and he ignited a fire to drive the bees away and gather honey. But he was unable to put out the fire, which grew until it destroyed the entire room and $850 worth of stuff.
According to what the court heard, Cuthbert’s acts were careless and endangered the lives of his neighbors. Cuthbert’s actions were denounced by Magistrate Mangoti, who stated that it was improper to put honey before other people’s safety and property.
Although Cuthbert was fortunate to avoid going to jail, the suspended sentence and restitution order act as a deterrent to him and other people who might act recklessly in a similar manner.
This episode serves as a reminder of the value of putting other people’s safety and property first, as well as the negative effects of acting carelessly.
