President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially opened Varsity Heights, a new student accommodation facility in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe on Friday, October 4, 2024. Valued at US$8.8 million, this facility is designed to house 384 students and offers modern living spaces along with essential amenities such as secure surroundings, fiber-linked Wi-Fi, a gym, and facilities tailored to student needs.
The development of Varsity Heights was made possible through a partnership involving various organizations, including First Mutual Life, First Mutual Health, and Deloitte Pension Funds, among others. During the opening ceremony, President Mnangagwa emphasized that this project demonstrates the positive changes that can arise from innovative ideas in government-led initiatives..ALSO READ:Warren Buffett May Target Japanese Financial Firms and Shipping Companies
The President stated, “My government will never tire of building a learning ecosystem that is agile and responsive to the needs of our talented young boys and girls.” He highlighted the importance of creating a knowledge-driven economy focused on innovation, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Mnangagwa also pointed out that Varsity Heights will enhance the overall experience of students on campus. He noted that the facility will foster a friendly environment that supports academic success and responsible citizenship. The design of Varsity Heights includes spaces for extracurricular activities, recreation, and support for the spiritual and emotional well-being of students
Vincent Hungwe, the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, remarked that this project reflects the government’s commitment to improved fund management and innovative solutions. He mentioned the transition from an unsustainable pay-as-you-go pension scheme to a self-managed fund, which has been successful due to government support.
Overall, Varsity Heights represents a significant step forward in providing quality accommodation for students while ensuring their academic and personal needs are met.
