A Radio Zimbabwe DJ, Edias Sibanda, finds himself implicated in a troubling incident unfolding in Mutare. Allegedly part of a group of five individuals, Sibanda stands accused of involvement in an armed robbery and kidnapping, targeting three individuals over a dispute related to purportedly counterfeit diamonds.
The narrative unveils with Vongai Matonga and Tafadzwa Utete making a court appearance in Mutare, facing charges of armed robbery and kidnapping. The authorities are actively pursuing Sibanda, along with two other suspects, Tatenda William and Brian Muzozo.
The events leading to the charges began when Romeo Charles Tembo, Morgan Zengeni, and Luckmore Chikove were driving in a silver Toyota Fortuner in Mutare. Matonga contacted Zengeni, seeking to address a previous diamond transaction marred by accusations of fraud dating back to 2020.
Agreeing to meet at a Zuva Petroleum station on Mutare-Harare Road, the situation quickly escalated upon their arrival. Allegedly, a Toyota Sienta blocked their path, and armed individuals, including Sibanda, emerged. Threats were made, shots fired, and the victims were forcibly removed from their vehicle and interrogated.

During the ordeal, money was extorted from Tembo, and Zengeni’s mobile phone was confiscated. The suspects, believing Zengeni to be involved in the sale of fake diamonds, subjected the victims to physical assault and demanded cash. Amidst the chaos, Chikove managed to escape, leaving Tembo and Zengeni in the hands of their captors.
Subsequently, the victims were transported to Harare, where they were further coerced into contacting acquaintances for ransom money. Fortunately, law enforcement intervened, responding to a report filed by Chikove. A sting operation was executed, resulting in the apprehension of Matonga and Utete, while Sibanda, Muzozo, and William evaded capture.
Tembo and Zengeni were liberated from their captors, bringing an end to their harrowing ordeal.
