A senior official at Zimbabwe’s Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has resigned, citing a “hostile and untenable” work environment.
The Acting Procurement Manager of the SRC, N. Chevene, resigned, citing a “hostile and untenable” work environment.
In a resignation letter addressed to Director General Elta Nengomasha, Chevene said his decision was driven by ongoing workplace tensions and unfounded accusations against his team. Chevene, who was appointed to the role on 23 January 2023, alleged that Nengomasha’s repeated assertions that the Procurement Management Unit (PMU) was underperforming had become “embarrassing and untrue.”
“I believe it’s all about the SRC, not individuals, because we all come and go,” Chevene wrote. He also highlighted the lack of response to a formal grievance letter he submitted on 12 July 2024, accusing the organisation of neglecting his concerns.

Chevene’s notice of resignation is effective from 02 September 2024, with his last working day set for 30 November 2024. He has requested to take vacation leave during the notice period.
His resignation adds to the SRC’s growing internal unrest, following complaints from employees earlier in August about Nengomasha’s leadership style and a controversial Human Resources Optimisation Exercise.
Staff members have described the work environment as “toxic,” accusing the leadership of intimidation and lack of transparency.
