Side Hustles and Tax Obligations in South Africa
According to Lenichea Carelse, Accounting Manager at Tax Consulting SA, income from side businesses is subject to taxation.
“It’s important to remember that your total earnings, including side hustle and salary income, are taxable,” she explains.
Anyone earning above the tax threshold must register as a provisional taxpayer, which involves making tax payments twice a year based on projected income, with a final payment due after submitting tax returns.
Failing to comply with tax regulations can result in criminal investigations and heavy penalties. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has the authority to impose fines for not registering for tax or failing to submit tax returns.
As side hustles continue to thrive in South Africa, ensuring compliance with tax laws is just as crucial as finding the right income stream.
