Tyla Makes History as First African Host of Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards

South African music sensation Tyla is set to make history as the first African to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, marking a monumental moment for African representation on the global stage.

The 23-year-old Grammy-winning artist will bring her bold charm and “Pretty Girl from Jo’burg” energy to the Nickelodeon stage on June 21, when the awards are held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

Nickelodeon confirmed Tyla’s hosting gig earlier this week, calling her a “trailblazer” in both music and culture. The announcement has sparked excitement across the continent, with fans already counting down to the show.

In a tweet that captured her disbelief and excitement, Tyla wrote: “I’m really about to host the kids’ choice awards 💀🤍🙈.”

Tyla, who rose to international fame with her viral hit “Water,” is no stranger to the Nickelodeon stage. In 2024, she earned nominations for Favourite Global Music Star, Favourite Breakout Artist, and Favourite Viral Song.

This year, she’s once again nominated in major categories, including Favourite Global Music Star and Favourite Music Collaboration for her feature on “Show Me Love” by WizTheMc and bees & honey.

Her hosting gig adds another milestone to an already historic run. Tyla is the first African artist in over a decade to crack the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and her Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance made her the youngest South African to be nominated in the category.

The star continues to dominate 2025, with upcoming collaborations and appearances. Most recently, she was announced as part of the “Smurfs” movie soundtrack, alongside heavyweights Rihanna and Cardi B.

The 2025 Kids’ Choice Awards promises a glittering night with a stacked lineup of nominees, including Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar, each securing four nominations.

Tyla’s bubbly personality, magnetic stage presence, and cultural pride are expected to shine through in her hosting role — complete with selfies, impromptu dance breaks, and that unmistakable South African flair.

The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards will air on MTV Africa (DStv channel 130) on Wednesday, June 25, at 5PM.

Tyla isn’t just riding the wave — she’s making waves of her own. And the world is watching.
