Unprecedented Power Cuts & Smuggling Plunging Textile Industry into Crisis

Zimbabwe’s textile industry, once a thriving sector providing thousands of jobs, is now facing a number of challenges that have pushed it to the brink of collapse.

Two major issues are power cuts and smuggling, which have made it difficult for textile factories to operate efficiently and compete with cheap imported products.

Due to an unstable power grid and unreliable electricity supply, textile factories have to rely on expensive backup generators to keep their operations running, increasing their costs. The frequent blackouts, lasting for hours or even days, have added to their woes, making it impossible for them to function efficiently.

Moreover, smugglers have found ways to bypass tariffs on imported clothing and textiles, flooding the market with cheap blankets and making it difficult for local textile manufacturers to compete. The combination of power cuts and smuggling has led to the closure of many textile factories, resulting in job losses and economic hardship for workers and their families.

The textile industry was once a major contributor to Zimbabwe’s GDP, but now it only plays a minor role in the economy. To revive the industry, the government and industry stakeholders need to work together to find solutions to the challenges facing the textile industry. Combatting smuggling and stabilizing the power grid are critical in revitalizing the industry and making it competitive once again.

A prominent textile businessman who wished to remain anonymous expressed concerns about the situation, stating that effective measures to address these issues are necessary, or the textile industry in Zimbabwe will continue to struggle in the years ahead, risking its collapse.

“The issue of power cuts and smuggling of blankets and clothes into the country is affecting our operation. Customers choose to buy from smugglers because their products are cheap. Sometimes we tried to approach the police through our relevant association, but the situation has not improved. The major problem now is the power cut, which we don’t have control over because it’s a national problem.”
