Forty-two-year-old Artwell Kanganga, hailing from Mhosva village in Uzumba, Mashonaland East province, has been handed a 10-month prison sentence for indecent assault.
Mutawatawa magistrate Mr. Obedience Matara sentenced Kanganga to 12 months in jail, with two months suspended on the condition of good behavior.
The court heard that on February 12, 2024, at Mhosva village, Chief Nyajina, Uzumba, Kanganga unlawfully fondled the breasts and touched the private parts of a 13-year-old girl. The incident occurred while the victim was at home and Kanganga was passing by on his way to his own homestead.
Kanganga approached the teenager while she was sitting alone on the verandah of a bedroom. Despite the girl’s protests and questioning, Kanganga threatened her into silence, warning her not to inform her mother, who was nearby in the bedroom.

However, the girl summoned her mother, who intervened and promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to Kanganga’s arrest.

The sentencing phase of the trial has been scheduled for today. The trial spanned four years, marked by numerous legal maneuvers and applications filed by Biti and his lawyer, Mr. Alec Muchadehama.
