A young guy from Nyawiswa Village, Karoi Locky Chigwegwe (19), made a terrible decision that would alter his life forever out of a desperation to fulfill cultural duties.
Due to his scheme to steal a cow in order to pay the customary bride price of lobola, Locky Chigwegwe was sentenced to nine years in prison for stock theft.
The incident happened at the Dabvu homestead in the evening of April 12. The careful cattle owner who filed the complaint had locked up his herd for the night to keep them safe from would-be robbers. Nevertheless, Chigwegwe was able to get past the security measures and take a $400 black cow because he was desperate and felt pressured by culture to pay lobola.
Chigwegwe delivered the pilfered cow to a man called Wamiridza as lobola in Muchena Village the following day. In many African societies, the custom of lobola is crucial and represents a man’s capacity and commitment to provide for his future wife. Chigwegwe thought he could maintain his relationship and live up to social norms by paying lobola.

But things fell apart very rapidly. After realizing one of his animals was missing, the original owner of the stolen cow reported the incident to the authorities. After initiating an investigation, the authorities discovered that Wamiridza was in possession of the stolen cow. Wamiridza admitted to being questioned that Chigwegwe had given him the cow as payment.
Chigwegwe was charged with stock theft after the police quickly placed him under arrest. The seriousness of his acts was revealed at the Karoi Magistrates Court hearing. He claimed the theft was motivated by his need to pay lobola, but the court found him guilty and gave him a nine-year prison sentence.
This instance demonstrates the serious repercussions of stock theft, a crime with harsh punishments since it affects rural livelihoods.
