Zim group set for Lake of Stars Festival
By Peter Tinashe Kaviya
Afro Wave, a Mufakose based afro-fusion band is set to perform alongside Africa’s best at the Lake of Stars Festival in Malawi.
The annual festival that is held at the scenic, white sand beach of Chintheche Inn set on the northern shores of Lake Malawi is renowned the world over and runs from September 30 to October 2.
Afro wave, a seven piece ensemble which fuses the electric guitar, keyboards, and traditional instruments creating a cocktail afro centric beat will perform alongside regional giants in the mold of South Africa’s Freshly Ground, Zambia’s Roberto and German electronic DJ and Producer Timo Maas among many other artistes.
Speaking to Showbiz, group leader and vocalist Samson Gohwa said it was an honor to represent the country at the popular music festival.
“As a group we are so pleased to be part of the line up at the famous festival, it’s a great honour to be part of this festival and more so being there to represent the country, hopefully we will be able to lift the country’s flag high. We also hope to make a mark and establish useful contacts as a band “Samson Gohwa said in a statement.
The Will Jameson directed festival will this year mark its 13th year with the highest number of acts expected to perform over three days.
Last year the event saw a beach fashion show, fringe theatre, literature workshops, a tech hub, urban art with a collaborative graffiti art expo with Zimbabwe being represented by another afro-fusion band, Mokoomba.
Afro Wave was formed in 2015 following misunderstandings in Gwarimba, a band that came second at the Music Crossroads Inter-regional Festival in Lilongwe, Malawi in August 2008.
The group is currently finalising work on their first eight track studio album titled Shuramurove recorded at Brendon Sole’s Media Matrix Audiocentric Studio which is set for release later in the year.
“I want to urge festival lovers and music fans to come in their numbers and get a feel of the true African fusion sound, as Afro Wave, we are ready to deliver a top drawer performance and we are sure we will not disappoint,” Gohwa said.
