Zimbabwe's Global Academic Presence Shines Bright as Robotics Students Head to Milan

Zimbabwe continues to make strides in the global academic arena, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Seventeen robotics students from Tynwald High School in Harare and Milestone College in Rusape are currently en route to Milan, Italy, to participate in the First Tech robotics competitions taking place from March 6th to March 12th. This endeavor not only underscores the nation’s commitment to STEM education but also follows previous successful performances on the global robotics stage.

Led by team coach and robotics mentor Mr. Charles Matanga, the group departed the country with high hopes of bringing home accolades while gaining valuable knowledge in practical robotics solutions. Zimbabwe stands out as the sole African representative at the Italian competitions, a testament to the country’s dedication to fostering STEM studies.

Mr. Matanga, who also serves as a computer science teacher at Tynwald, highlighted the significance of Zimbabwe’s participation in such events, aligning with the National Development Strategy 1’s emphasis on innovation and modernization. The team aims not only to showcase their preparations but also to learn new design mechanisms and software programs utilized in robotics.

This isn’t the first time Tynwald has made waves in global robotics competitions. In October 2022, the school clinched a gold medal at the First Global Robotics competitions in Geneva, Switzerland, outperforming technologically advanced nations. Success in the Italian league could lead to further international competitions in the United States of America.

The students participating in the First Tech Challenge are eager to absorb new experiences and expand their skillsets. Zoey Chibune, a Form 4 student at Tynwald, expressed excitement over the opportunity to learn and apply coding techniques and navigate various machinery components to enhance their prototypes.

Similarly, Tawona Musariri from Milestone College, a seasoned robotics participant, anticipates further knowledge acquisition through this experience. With a track record of success in past competitions, the team is confident in their abilities and aims to secure victory in Milan.

Tynwald High School has a rich history of participation in global robotics events, including the 2017 First Global Robotics competition in Washington DC, where they showcased their talents. Successes in Mexico City in 2018 and Accra, Ghana, in 2019 further solidify Zimbabwe’s position as a formidable contender in the world of robotics.
