Maxwell Zinyengerere, the councillor for Mhondoro-Mubayira ward 27, has emphasized that food security is crucial for effective local governance, urging leaders to ensure their communities do not face hunger.
After the handover of tractors donated by St John Apostolic Church of the Whole World, Zinyengerere stated that food sufficiency is essential for maintaining political stability. “When people have enough food, they are less likely to challenge their leaders,” he explained. He believes that a secure food supply can lead to fewer conflicts, greater trust in leadership, and overall peace in the community.
Zinyengerere highlighted the challenges posed by climate change, particularly the effects of El Niño, which have resulted in significant livestock losses and diminished agricultural capacity. He noted that diseases such as January disease, anthrax, and foot and mouth disease have further hindered local food production.

The councillor pointed out that climate change disrupts essential aspects of food security, leading to unstable weather patterns and extreme conditions that adversely affect agriculture. Rising food prices, social inequalities, and inadequate infrastructure also exacerbate the issue of food accessibility.
He warned that health issues related to climate change, such as increased illnesses and difficulties in food storage, pose additional challenges for communities. Fluctuating incomes, inconsistent harvests, and disrupted supply chains further undermine the stability of food systems.
Zinyengerere called for urgent and coordinated efforts to address food security in the face of escalating climate impacts, stressing that while solutions exist, least developed countries require substantial global support to tackle food insecurity effectively.
