A car dealer, Terai Mudzimukunze, is under scrutiny for allegedly defrauding Lovemore Mangena, a Chief Building Inspector for the City of Harare, in a land acquisition scheme.
Mudzimukunze appeared before Magistrate Isheanesu Matova but did not enter a plea. The case revolves around a transaction that took place in December 2023, initiated when Mangena was introduced to Mudzimukunze by a mutual friend, Steven Soso. Seeking land for farming in Mashonaland East, Mangena was led to believe that Mudzimukunze could facilitate the purchase.
Accompanied by Soso, the trio visited a 70-80-hectare plot at Bluewaters Farm in Goromonzi. However, when Mangena inquired about the necessary paperwork, Mudzimukunze and Soso informed him that he needed to pay a fee to Ministry of Lands officials to expedite the process.
Lacking the funds, Mangena agreed to hand over his VW Bora, valued at $4,500, as partial payment, with the promise that Mudzimukunze would sell the car to cover the official fees.
In January, Mudzimukunze claimed the car had not yet sold and requested an additional $1,500 to start the paperwork. Mangena managed to gather $1,000, which he gave to Mudzimukunze.
Realizing he had fallen victim to a scam, Mangena reported the incident to the police. A third individual, Takudzwa Chigutirwa, is believed to be involved but is currently on the run. The case highlights the risks associated with land acquisition and the importance of due diligence in such transactions.
