A Chinese mine supervisor Liu Haifeng has been arrested after a viral video showed him pointing a firearm at a worker who was demanding overdue wages.
The confrontation occurred on January 21 at Bijou Farm in Gweru and involved Liu, a supervisor at Ming Chang Sino-Africa Mining Investments, and 38-year-old Kholwani Dube, a local worker.
According to police reports, both individuals have been taken into custody. Liu Haifeng faces charges related to the use of the firearm, while Kholwani Dube is charged with assault for stabbing Haifeng in the leg during the incident, confirmed National Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The dispute appears to have escalated after Dube reportedly drove an excavator toward Haifeng, allegedly ignoring orders from his supervisors. This led to his suspension by the mining company.
In footage circulating online, Dube is heard demanding payment for his wages, shouting, “I want my money!” Another video depicts him lying face down, restrained by three men, with one holding a gun to his head.
The videos have sparked significant public outrage, bringing attention to longstanding concerns about the treatment of local employees by Chinese businesses, particularly in the mining sector.
