Chirume Sentenced to 40 Years for Raping GZU Student

Chirume Tinashe A Masvingo panel beater, (40), has been sentenced to 40 years in prison by Masvingo Regional Magistrate Mr. Bishard Chineka. Chirume was found guilty of robbery and rape after he forcibly entered a residence in Target Kopje suburb where three female students from Great Zimbabwe University were sleeping.

Armed with a machete and in a state of undress, Chirume robbed his first victim of US$10 and the second victim of US$5. Following the robberies, he instructed the first victim to lie on her bed and proceeded to rape her without using protection.

During the trial, the regional prosecutor, Mr. Liberty Hove, presented compelling evidence, establishing that Chirume attempted to rape the second student as well. However, she managed to escape by jumping out of the room through a window, alerting others with her screams for help. This prompted Chirume to flee from the scene.

Chirume’s luck ran out when he was positively identified by friends of the victims, who promptly notified the police. The arrest took place at Pangolin Light Industries in the city.

In light of the overwhelming evidence, Regional Magistrate Mr. Bishard Chineka sentenced Chirume to an effective 40 years behind bars for the charges of robbery and rape.
