Bulawayo :An organisation representing a number of local churches has joined forces with the government in stemming drugs and substance abuse.
Speaking during the Council for Churches in Africa (CCA) , Bulawayo Provincial Youth Chapter’s campaign against drugs and substance abuse launch on Saturday , CCA founder and president Archbishop Dr Rocky Moyo said that the organisation is rallying behind the government’s ‘war’ against drug abuse.
“As churches, we are ready to assist government particularly the police force in alerting them to apprehend drug cartels who are embedded in our communities,” said the CCA boss.
He bemoaned how drug abuse is deterring young people to meaningfully participate in developmental issues including registering to vote.
” As Council for Churches in Africa (CCA), we are really saddened by the spike in drugs and substance abuse amongst youths in societies.
” Youths play a crucial role in the spheres of our beloved country, but however, our Peace, Justice and Conflict Resolution’s department for Research and Policy observed that there has been low participation amongst youths in developmental related frameworks of our society including the current voter registration , “added
He also said that the organisation has ’embarked on counseling and empowerment initiatives amongst focus groups headed by youths who will be community ambassadors amongst their respective communities’.
Addressing at the same occasion, CCA youths and child care director Trymore Chawanji reiterated that young people should abstain from drugs and start to actively participate in development and nation-building initiative.
“We welcome you all to this important event which seeks to address the problem of drugs and substance abuse amongst the youths.
” This has come to our attention as the youths that we are not participating within the affairs of our society as a result of drugs. We have not been active in participating towards the development of our country,” bemoaned Chawanji
Meanwhile, the interdenominational organisation donated soccer jerseys to a budding social soccer team ‘Bazooka Shooters’ in yet another effort to arrest drugs and substance abuse.
Recently, President Emmerson Mnangagwa warned that time was now nigh for drug peddlers and abusers.
