A 45-year-old woman from Cowdray Park appeared before the Bulawayo Regional Court on Monday facing charges of possessing 2.6 kilograms of marijuana valued at ZiG78,000.
The accused, Sazini Phiri, was arrested after police reportedly found her carrying the drugs in a cardboard box wrapped in clear plastic. She was intercepted by detectives shortly after stepping off a commuter omnibus in the city centre.
Regional Magistrate Mr. Mark Dzira heard the case and is expected to deliver judgment on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Prosecutor Mr. Jethro Mada told the court that detectives received a tip-off around midnight on October 30, suggesting that Phiri was transporting drugs from Cowdray Park into the city. Acting on the information, officers stopped a commuter omnibus near TM Hyper and identified Phiri among the passengers.
“The detectives identified themselves and asked the accused to open her bag. Inside, they found a sealed cardboard box containing two transparent plastic packets filled with dagga,” said Mada.
Police later conducted a search at Phiri’s home, where they reportedly recovered additional packets of loose marijuana hidden in a white plastic container in her yard.
The seized drugs were taken to the Bulawayo Main Post Office, where they were weighed in Phiri’s presence and confirmed to total 2.6 kilograms.
