Crisis Coalition Official Goes Into Hiding

Former finance manager at the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition Rabia Jessub has reportedly gone into hiding following a raid by suspected state security agents at the organisation’s offices on 27 June 2025.

The raid, which occurred in Harare, saw the abduction of a caretaker who was on duty at the time. Internal communication reviewed by this publication indicates that the agents were specifically targeting Jessub and the Coalition’s director.

“We suspect that the latest raid is linked to the August incident,” reads part of a message sent to Jessub by a colleague, urging her to minimise movement and refrain from social media activity. “As you are aware, our organization is listed as one of the top anti-regime organisations.”

The Crisis Coalition is a prominent civic organisation in Zimbabwe, known for its vocal criticism of government policies and human rights violations. Over the years, the group has faced repeated threats, surveillance, and alleged harassment from state-linked actors.

The motive behind the latest operation remains unclear, but sources within the organisation suggest it may be part of a broader crackdown on civil society organisations perceived to be opposing the current administration.

Efforts are reportedly underway to secure funding to ensure the safety of Jessub and the Coalition’s director, whose whereabouts are also undisclosed.

Human rights watchdogs have previously raised alarm over the increase in politically motivated abductions and intimidation of civil society actors in Zimbabwe, especially in the lead-up to key political events.

Authorities have not issued any statement regarding the 27 June raid or the disappearance of the caretaker.

As the situation develops, human rights groups are calling for an immediate investigation into the raid and for assurances regarding the safety of those targeted.
