Sihlangu Dlodlo, the chief executive officer of Highlanders, was found dead at his home in Bulawayo on Monday. He was 60 years old.
Friends reported that he was last seen alive on Saturday. Police responded to a call from family and friends who had to break down his gate to access the property, where they discovered his lifeless body through a window.
A Facebook post he made on October 16 is now being interpreted as a potential suicide note. In the post, he expressed dark sentiments about funerals, writing in Ndebele about dying alone and the aftermath of such a fate.
Dlodlo, known for his sense of humor, left a final post on Facebook shortly after 3 PM on Saturday, stating, “Ngiqinisile, ngiqinisile ngithi kini, uNkulunkulu kadakwa shem [Verily, verily I say unto you, God is never drunk. For real].”
Allan “Ripper” Mpofu, a close friend, shared his grief, explaining how they discovered Dlodlo’s body after raising concerns about his whereabouts. “We had to force open the gate to get in. It was heartbreaking to see my friend like that,” he said.
Dlodlo was remembered fondly by colleagues and friends as a kind-hearted individual. He had a successful career, including roles as a senior marketing executive at Innscor and Lobel’s, and he briefly served as the general manager of Kings and Queens Funeral Services before taking on the CEO role at Highlanders in April this year.
