Death Penalty Era Ends in Zimbabwe After Decades of Advocacy

Death Penalty

Zimbabwe has officially ended the use of the death penalty with the enactment of the Death Penalty Abolition Act.

According to a government notice published on Tuesday, courts are now prohibited from sentencing individuals to death for any crime. Instead, judges will issue alternative penalties deemed appropriate for the specific circumstances of each case.

The new law also ensures that the Supreme Court will no longer uphold death sentences during appeals. Any such sentences, regardless of when they were handed down, will be replaced with suitable alternative punishments.
