Mabvuku boy Douglas Mapfumo, a Polokwane City striker, has been called into the Zimbabwe Warriors squad for the first time. He is expected to be a key player in the team’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa. Mapfumo expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity, describing it as a dream come true.
He attended Mabvuku Primary School, Chemhanza High School, and Oriel Boys High School, where he completed his O level. He also played for All Stars Academy in the same area before moving to Legends Academy to finish his playing career.
He moved from Legends Academy to South Africa, where he played for several teams in the DSTV Premier League and the lower divisions. He has played for Cape Town City, Cape Umoya (with Gabriel Nyoni), Bidvests, and Polokwane City.
The 24-year-old is having a good season as the team’s main striker, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Zimbabweans expect Douglas Mapfumo to use his South African League experience when the Warriors play Bafana Bafana on June 11th in South Africa.
Now Zimbabwe is experiencing a shortage of good strike force, with Coach Jairos Tapera attempting to convince Nyasha Mushekwi and Knowledge Musona to join his troops in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Currently, Zimbabwe’s strike force is led by out-of-form Tino Kadewere, who has scored three goals in 25 matches for the Warriors. Another new face who was also added to the strike force along with Douglas Mapfumo is Tymon Machope of Simba Bhora.
