Two Fake War Veterans Faces US$66k Fraud Charges

Two elderly women have been remanded in custody pending a bail application after being accused of defrauding land seekers of over US$66,000.

Perpetual Chimuti, 57, and Pedzisai Chikari, 46, purported to operate a fraudulent task force collecting funds for the welfare of war veterans in Banket.

The elderly women allegedly utilized social media platforms to advertise their scheme, creating multiple groups with 120 to 150 members each.

They solicited cash amounts ranging from US$10 to US$1,500 under the guise of covering administrative, fuel, and welfare expenses for war veterans.

Claiming funds were also needed for offer letter processing, they traveled across Zvimba, Makonde, Rafingora, and Banket, showcasing various farms in Mashonaland West Province. Victims lost a total of US$66,000 through the scam, while their accomplices remain at large.

Rufaro Chonzi represented the State in court proceedings.
