A Harare woman, Elizabeth Parerenyatwa Mucheche, appeared in court on charges of perjury and threatening to kill a businessman who is the complainant in her case. The proceedings took place before Harare Magistrate Mr. Dennis Mangosi.
According to the State, Mucheche claimed she was “driven by Mbuya Nehanda” to reclaim an estate allegedly stolen from her by the late Brian James Rhodes. The State requested that the matter proceed under the Mental Health Act, suspecting Mucheche may be suffering from a mental illness. Prosecutor Mr. Rufaro Chonzi presented this application, but the defense opposed, arguing that the State must provide grounds for her to undergo a mental health examination.

Mr. Mangosi remanded Mucheche in custody until Friday for a bail application, allowing time for the mental health evaluation.
The allegations state that in October 2022, at 5 Woodbridge Close, Glen Lorne, Harare, Mucheche, who has no legal relation to Rhodes or authority over his estate, allegedly forged a power of attorney, claiming it had been signed by Anne Rhodes, authorizing her as executor of the estate. The power of attorney was purportedly signed after Rhodes’ death, indicating it could not have been genuine.
In a separate charge of making death threats, the court heard that in July 2024, at the same address, Mucheche allegedly threatened to kill the complainant after he filed a perjury report against her at ZRP Highlands.
