Somalia and Ethiopia have reached a significant agreement to address their longstanding issues over the breakaway Somaliland region and Ethiopia’s need for sea access, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed.
In a joint press conference in Ankara on Wednesday, Erdogan expressed his gratitude to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for their “historic reconciliation.”
Erdogan praised the agreement, expressing hope that it would mark the beginning of a new chapter of peace and cooperation between Somalia and Ethiopia.

He emphasized that the deal would ultimately enable Ethiopia the world’s most populous landlocked nation to gain access to the sea.
“Today’s meeting is an important step, particularly regarding Ethiopia’s sea access. I believe President Mohamud will offer the necessary support to meet Ethiopia’s demands,” Erdogan stated.
The Turkish leader further explained that the joint declaration centers on the future rather than past conflicts, outlining the principles upon which Somalia and Ethiopia will base their future relationship. He also shared his optimism about the new partnership on social media.
