Former Chicken Slice Accountant Faces Fraud Charges for Misappropriating $45,000 Intended for Suppliers

Former Chicken Slice Accountant Faces Fraud Charges for Misappropriating $45,000 Intended for Suppliers

Zengenene, a former financial accountant at Chicken Slice, has been brought before the court on fraud charges. It is alleged that he redirected $45,000 intended for suppliers from Slice Distributors for personal use. Paddington Mungate, a senior internal auditor, became concerned when he found pending payment transactions from 2022 during an audit.

Following questioning, Zengenene, aged 30, resolved some payment transactions but left others unresolved. This triggered an internal investigation that uncovered his misuse of accessible funds for personal purposes.

As a financial accountant, Zengenene’s responsibilities encompassed approving company payments and conducting daily account reconciliations.

The State asserts that Mungate, during his routine checks on company payments to suppliers, detected pending transactions dating back to 2022. With information indicating that funds were allocated to the finance department to settle all payments, Mungate delved deeper into the matter.

Engaging Zengenene, responsible for supplier payments, Mungate granted him a two-week period to clear all pending transactions. However, during this timeframe, Zengenene purportedly resolved some transactions while leaving others unsettled.

On February 1, Mungate acquired statements from 10 suppliers and observed discrepancies where funds signed for by Zengenene had not reached the suppliers as expected.

An initial internal audit conducted by the company revealed that the 10 companies had not received payment despite US$45,146 being allocated to Zengenene for supplier payments. Unfortunately, no funds were recovered during the investigation.

Rufaro Chonzi represented the State in the proceedings.
