Gov’t Launches Major Rural Water Initiative

In a bold move to tackle water shortages and ignite rural development, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has deployed war veterans to the frontlines of a new national drilling project, with Manicaland province selected as the launchpad for the rollout.

The program, spearheaded by the President’s Special Investment Advisor, Dr. Paul Tungwarara, will see the distribution of drilling rigs to veterans across every province, effectively placing them at the helm of a major water infrastructure drive.

Addressing beneficiaries in Manicaland yesterday, Dr. Tungwarara stated that the initiative is a strategic pillar of the Second Republic’s rural development agenda. “This is more than just providing water; it is about positioning our veterans as agents of change. They will be responsible for drilling boreholes, delivering clean water, and building livelihoods in their own communities,” he said.

The program is expected to create jobs and boost agricultural productivity by improving access to irrigation. Authorities project that the ripple effects will transform rural economies and foster self-reliance in villages currently grappling with water scarcity.

“By entrusting these resources to those who sacrificed for our independence, the government is honoring their service while equipping them to lead from the front in this development crusade,” Dr. Tungwarara added.

The initiative marks the first phase of a nationwide programs aimed at ensuring every village has access to safe drinking water, with the goal of strengthening rural economies and uplifting household livelihoods under the Second Republic’s inclusive growth agenda.
