Gunners Secure Crucial Derby Win to Stay in Premier League Title Race

After a spirited North London derby victory over Tottenham, Arsenal pulled within four points of Liverpool atop the Premier League. The game took place at Emirates Stadium.

After a tough week in which they lost the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at home to Newcastle United and the FA Cup third round on penalties to Manchester United, the Gunners who have played more games than Liverpool were eager to get back on track.

Arsenal dominated the first half but went down to a goalless draw in the 25th minute as Son Heung-min’s strike ricocheted off William Saliba and caught custodian David Raya off guard.

Quick on the heels of that, five minutes before halftime, Arsenal’s Gabriel headed in a corner from Declan Rice. Unfortunately, Spurs custodian Antonin Kinsky was unable to clear the danger, and it looked like Dominic Solanke was the one with the last touch, leading to an own goal.

After only four minutes, Arsenal took a 2-1 lead at halftime thanks to a low, bobbling strike by Leandro Trossard that snuck past Kinsky, who had better luck.

Even though Mikel Arteta’s team had the upper hand in the second half, they were unable to convert their advantage into a victory. Pedro Porro’s last-ditch effort from a tight angle hit the post, nearly punishing them.

As the final whistle sounded, the relief that washed over Arsenal fans and manager Mikel Arteta could be felt. Although they needed the win to stay in the race with Liverpool, they made it much more difficult than it had to be.

The significance of the win was highlighted by Gabriel’s joyful shirt fling into the crowd, considering recent cup defeats. But Arsenal’s persistent problems, like as their reliance on set pieces and their lack of precision finishing in open play, were exposed in the match.
