A man from Gweru found himself in police custody after he stole a taxi with the intention of impressing his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.
According to Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the suspect, identified as Amos Mabiginye (40), approached a pirate taxi in the Gweru Central Business District. His plan was to hire the taxi to visit his girlfriend.
Inspector Mahoko explained the sequence of events, stating that Mabiginye hired the taxi from Nigel Gombakomba, who operates a pirate taxi service. The suspect expressed his desire to see his girlfriend and hired the vehicle for that purpose.
However, during the journey, Mabiginye made an unusual request. He asked Gombakomba if he could take over the driving duties in order to impress his girlfriend. Surprisingly, Gombakomba agreed and handed over the car to Mabiginye.

As they approached Lundi Park Shops, Mabiginye asked Gombakomba to step out and purchase drinks, giving him a $10 note for the task. But as soon as Gombakomba left the vehicle, Mabiginye took off with the taxi at high speed, leaving Gombakomba behind.
Realizing he had been duped, Gombakomba sought help from another motorist and together they pursued Mabiginye. They eventually caught up with him at a fuel station, where Mabiginye was refueling the stolen vehicle.
With the assistance of garage security personnel, Mabiginye was apprehended and handed over to the police.
Now facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle, Mabiginye’s attempt to impress his girlfriend has landed him in serious trouble with the law.
