His Worship Jacob Mafume, the Mayor of Harare City Council, received the coveted Rugby Africa Cup trophy from the Zimbabwe Senior National Men’s Rugby Team, the Sables at Town House yesterday.
Joel Gombera represented the team’s primary sponsor, Nedbank Zimbabwe, and Losson Mtongwiza, president of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU), attended the historic presentation.
The Sables established themselves as the top rugby team on the continent when they won the Rugby Africa Cup in Kampala earlier this year.
ZRU President Mtongwiza thanked the councilors, employees, and team representatives in attendance for their steadfast support. He emphasized how important it is for the town to give local rugby clubs the facilities and resources they need, as these have been vital to the team’s success.
“We are immensely grateful for the support we receive from the City of Harare,” Mtongwiza stated. “Our clubs’ success and the development of talent have been made possible by your facilities. This Africa Cup triumph is a result of our players’ and coaches’ tremendous effort and dedication, as well as the tremendous support of our community.”
