The City of Harare, together with the Netherlands Embassy and local organizations, held an exciting Open Streets event in Newlands on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The event aimed to promote safer and more inclusive transport options in the city.
Under the theme On Your Bike!, the event turned streets into a car-free zone, encouraging people to use bicycles, skate, walk, or jog instead of driving.
Many community groups and organizations took part, including Manica Bikes, Road Safe, Green & Clean, Buffalo Bicycles, Zimbabwe Bikes, and Cali Graph. Their goal was to promote sustainable and affordable ways of getting around.

Brian Zvomuya, Acting Chief Traffic and Transportation Planner for Harare, spoke about the importance of such events in making the city more welcoming for cyclists and pedestrians.
*”Harare open street events encourage safe and affordable transport options like cycling and walking. They also help bring people together and build a stronger community,”* said Zvomuya.
The event featured many fun activities, such as cycling, skating, jogging, dancing, book-sharing, and environmental projects. Residents of all ages took part, enjoying the lively atmosphere while supporting safer and more accessible streets.
The Open Streets program supports global efforts to create better cities by reducing traffic, improving air quality, and encouraging community participation. By promoting alternative transport, Harare hopes to rely less on cars and build healthier, more connected neighborhoods.
Following the success of this event, organizers are hopeful that similar initiatives will continue, helping Harare move toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.
