Japanese atomic bomb survivors win Nobel Peace Prize

Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization representing atomic bomb survivors, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.

At a ceremony held in Oslo on Friday, Nobel Committee Chair Joergen Watne Frydnes commended the group for its “extraordinary efforts” toward achieving a nuclear-free world. He highlighted their significant role in establishing what is known as the nuclear taboo.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee emphasized the importance of the group’s use of survivor testimonies to advocate against the use of nuclear weapons in the future.

This year, a total of 286 candidates were nominated for the prestigious peace prize, consisting of 197 individuals and 89 organizations. Nominations can be submitted by people holding significant authority, such as members of national legislatures, governments, and international courts.

In 2023, the prize was awarded to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi for her courageous work in combating the oppression of women in Iran.
