With the activation of 20 5G base stations across key locations in Zimbabwe, from Harare to Bulawayo, and reaching universities, Parliament, and airports, the country is poised for unprecedented connectivity.
This high-speed data network aims to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas, creating new opportunities for all citizens.
The implications of this launch are far-reaching. The introduction of 5G technology is set to revolutionize various sectors of the economy, from agriculture to education.
Farmers will soon be able to adopt smart technologies to optimize food production while conserving resources. Industries will experience enhanced automation and efficiency, while education will benefit from the creation of digital classrooms, turning cities into smart hubs that serve citizens more effectively.
The Vice President noted that this advancement is a testament to Zimbabwe’s leadership in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. “This is not a distant dream — it is happening now,” he affirmed.
The rollout of 5G services builds upon previous infrastructure developments, including the deployment of 275 LTE base stations as part of the National Mobile Broadband Phase 3 program, launched by His Excellency Cde Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa in September 2021.
With 140 solar-powered sites, NetOne aims to bring connectivity to remote areas, significantly reducing carbon emissions and championing sustainable development.
Beyond merely offering faster internet speeds, the 5G network serves as the backbone of Zimbabwe’s emerging digital economy.
It is geared toward ensuring that local businesses remain competitive on a global scale while empowering various sectors—such as construction, transportation, and mining—to excel in a rapidly evolving market.
In the realm of education, NetOne is committed to closing the digital divide by providing ICT resources to rural and marginalized schools.
The goal is to equip every Zimbabwean child with the tools necessary to thrive in a digital world, ultimately building a workforce that is prepared for the challenges of the future.
The company’s commitment extends beyond technology; through its corporate social responsibility initiatives, NetOne is making a tangible impact in local communities.
Efforts include the installation of solar-powered boreholes, the creation of nutritional gardens, and support for poverty alleviation programs.
“This is about more than connectivity — it’s about uplifting lives and addressing the challenges our people face,” stated a company representative.
As the ceremony concluded, there was a palpable sense of optimism and enthusiasm for the future.
The Vice President expressed his gratitude for the collaborative efforts that have brought this project to fruition and reiterated the government’s commitment to a digitally inclusive Zimbabwe.
With the launch of 5G services, NetOne is poised to reshape how Zimbabweans live, work, and connect, setting the stage for sustained prosperity and progress.
“May God bless NetOne, and may God bless Zimbabwe,” the Vice President concluded, echoing the sentiments of all present as they celebrated this historic moment.
