Youth Lead the Way in Sustainability: NetOne’s Initiative Gains Momentum

NetOne has expanded its environmental education efforts by collaborating with primary and secondary schools in Kwekwe and Masvingo, reinforcing its dedication to empowering young Zimbabweans to take action on environmental issues through hands-on learning and community engagement.

The initiative brought together students from Kwekwe High School and Hillside Government School in Masvingo, fostering a shared learning experience focused on environmental responsibility and civic engagement.

NetOne’s outreach in these two cities took a strategic, age-specific approach.

At Kwekwe High School, older students participated in in-depth sessions on pressing environmental topics, including climate change, sustainable development, and the role of personal responsibility in environmental conservation.

These discussions were complemented by cleanup drives, encouraging critical thinking alongside practical action.

Meanwhile, younger learners at Hillside Government School engaged in foundational environmental education through games and interactive exercises. These fun, age-appropriate activities introduced them to the basics of environmental care, helping to instill a sense of responsibility from an early age.

Central to the program is the belief that caring for the environment goes hand-in-hand with being an active, responsible citizen.

NetOne encouraged students to see themselves as agents of change within their communities, showing how everyday actions can lead to a cleaner, healthier environment.

The cleanup activities served as more than just lessons—they were proof to students that they could make a tangible difference.

The program was designed to boost their confidence and inspire long-term commitment to environmental causes.

Each location offered a unique setting for environmental exploration. In Kwekwe, a mining hub, students examined how industrial activity impacts ecosystems and explored how innovation and sustainability can coexist.

Discussions also focused on how businesses can act as environmental stewards.

In Masvingo, an agricultural region, younger students explored topics like sustainable farming, water conservation, and preserving rural landscapes. These lessons helped them connect environmental issues with their everyday surroundings.

NetOne’s educational strategy blended traditional instruction with creative learning formats. In Kwekwe, older students engaged in group research projects, developing presentations and action plans to tackle local environmental concerns.

These experiences helped bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.

In Masvingo, activities included environmental storytelling, themed art projects, and interactive role-play. These tools made learning fun and helped reinforce environmental values in a way that was relatable and lasting for younger students.

Beyond the classroom, the program encouraged students to become environmental ambassadors in their families and neighborhoods. NetOne provided take-home materials to support this ripple effect, ensuring that lessons learned would influence wider circles beyond the schoolyard.

Students also had the opportunity to interact with local environmental advocates, giving them role models and potential mentors to guide continued involvement in environmental initiatives.

To evaluate the success of the program, NetOne facilitated pre- and post-activity discussions that helped track shifts in student understanding, attitudes, and motivation.

Students shared reflections and testimonials, offering insight into the impact of their experience and helping NetOne tailor future programs to better serve diverse learners.

NetOne’s work in Kwekwe and Masvingo is part of a broader goal to foster a culture of environmental leadership among Zimbabwe’s youth.

By engaging students from different age groups and backgrounds, the program creates a strong foundation for a generation that is environmentally aware, action-oriented, and ready to shape sustainable futures.
