Joe Biden Asserts He Could Have Defeated Donald Trump Again

President Joe Biden

President Joe Biden has expressed confidence that he could have defeated Donald Trump in a hypothetical re-election bid but acknowledged doubts about his stamina for another full term.

In an interview with USA Today, the 82-year-old President said, “So far, so good,” regarding his ability to lead, but added, “Who knows what I’ll be like at 86?”

The conversation with journalist Susan Page covered a range of topics, including Biden’s contemplation of pre-emptive pardons for Trump’s critics, such as former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney and former health official Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Considering Pre-Emptive Pardons

Biden revealed that he had discussed the possibility of pardons during a meeting with Trump following the November election. “I was very straightforward with him,” Biden said. “I tried to explain that revisiting old grievances wasn’t in his interest.” Biden noted that Trump listened but didn’t push back on the issue.

The final decision on pardons, Biden said, would hinge on Trump’s cabinet choices if re-elected.

Reflections on His Presidency

Biden defended his record during the interview, sharing that Trump had complimented him on his economic performance during their Oval Office discussion. “He thought I was leaving with a strong economic record,” Biden said.

The interview marked Biden’s only sit-down with a print outlet since he dropped out of the race in July, and it came amidst criticism over his limited media appearances. The President has not held a press conference since stepping aside.

Hunter Biden’s Pardon and Controversies

Biden also addressed his decision to issue a full and unconditional pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, who faced charges of tax evasion and illegally purchasing a firearm. The pardon drew criticism, even from within his own party, as Biden had previously pledged not to intervene in his son’s legal issues.

Age and Future Leadership

Joe Biden acknowledged that concerns about his age and cognitive sharpness had sparked debates within his party. Despite polling data suggesting he could have won against Trump, Biden admitted, “I wasn’t aiming to still be in office at 85 or 86 years old. But who knows?”

The President’s decision to step aside has been met with mixed reactions. Some prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have suggested that Biden’s earlier withdrawal from the race could have improved the party’s chances after Vice President Kamala Harris lost to Trump.
