Zimbabwe’s Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, will today head a Zimbabwean delegation at a high-level United Nations conference where he is expected to advocate for the unconditional removal of sanctions imposed on the country by Western powers.
The International Conference on Sanctions, Business, and Human Rights, which takes place today and tomorrow, will bring together global leaders and experts to discuss the impact of sanctions on UN member states and work towards establishing guidelines on the effects of embargoes, business practices, and human rights.
The event is being hosted by the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on human rights, Professor Alena Douhan.

In a pre-conference interview, Minister Ziyambi shared that he would be presenting a paper outlining the detrimental effects of the sanctions, which are often described as “targeted” by those who impose them but are seen as harming ordinary Zimbabweans.
“As a nation, we will present a paper demonstrating the damaging consequences of these unilateral measures. We will highlight the losses our country has incurred as a result,” Minister Ziyambi stated.
“We will also explain how, despite being portrayed as targeting specific individuals, these sanctions have had widespread negative effects on the general population and businesses across the country.”
Zimbabwe’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Nesbert Samasuwo, added that Zimbabwe would be joined by other like-minded nations in lobbying for the removal of sanctions.
“The aim of the conference is to emphasize the widespread impact of sanctions. Countries such as China and Cuba, who are also critical of these measures, will support our call,” he said.
