Sheldon, aka “Veggie,” a young man from Mbare, shares his experience of being in remand prison for three months two years ago. Veggie was arrested in 2021 after stealing a neighbor’s cellphone.
Veggie said, “I will never commit a crime again. What I experienced in remand prison was very hard and difficult, largely due to the drug addiction that got me into that situation. I stole the cellphone because I needed money to buy ‘mutoriro’ (drugs).
In remand prison, I experienced lice (inda) with muscles for the first time in my life. These insects were all over the room, and when you crushed them, they made a sound before dying.

He continued, “I don’t think I could go back. Some of the prison clothes were very dirty and torn. We ate junk food like beans, chunks, porridge, and spinach. The soup was very dark, and sometimes you would find snails in your food. Even the vegetables were often whole leaves on your plate, and that was considered meat. We ate porridge without sugar; they said, ‘You’ve already eaten sugar; it’s in your body.’
We had supper at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and went to bed at 3 o’clock in the midday.” Sheldon aka Veggie
