A 24-year-old Bulawayo man, Alfred Ngwenya, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for culpable homicide following a deadly altercation over amai muponesi.
The incident occurred in the early hours of November 15, 2023, when Ngwenya and the now-deceased engaged in a heated argument over the amai nuponesi.
The dispute escalated into a violent fight, during which Ngwenya stabbed the victim twice—once in the thigh and once in the back—before fleeing the scene.
An hour later, a passerby discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood and alerted authorities.
Police investigations swiftly led to Ngwenya’s arrest in Silobela, where he was undergoing a “cleansing” ritual at an apostolic shrine.

Shockingly, during his arrest, Ngwenya led investigators to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, though its connection to the case remains unclear.
In court, Ngwenya pleaded guilty to culpable homicide. Magistrate Samuel Dube sentenced him to seven years in prison, with three years suspended on condition of good behavior.
