Harare Woman Fined $100 for Failing to Visit Boyfriend After Accepting Transport Money
The Harare Magistrate Court recently ordered a woman to pay $100 in damages to her boyfriend after failing to honor a sleepover arrangement despite accepting transport money.
Taurai Chidokwani, the complainant, transferred $2 via mobile money to his girlfriend, Primrose Sithole, as fare for her to visit him.
However, Sithole failed to show up, switching off her phone and cutting communication.
Feeling defrauded and emotionally distressed, Chidokwani lodged a complaint at Budiriro 2 Police Station, leading to Sithole’s arrest and subsequent court appearance.
During the trial, Chidokwani provided concrete evidence, including the mobile money transaction and WhatsApp messages exchanged between the two.
He argued that Sithole’s actions caused him not only financial loss but also emotional distress, which compelled him to seek legal recourse.
Magistrate Cynthia Marare ruled in Chidokwani’s favor, citing Sithole’s actions as a breach of agreement.

She ordered Sithole to refund the $2 and pay an additional $70 as compensation for breaching the agreement, along with $33 as special damages for emotional distress.
“The court must send a strong message that personal agreements should be honored to maintain trust and order in society,” Magistrate Marare said.
