Thomas Mapfumo, the exiled Chimurenga music icon, has voiced his disdain over the trend of businessmen Wicknell Chivayo, in conjunction with the Zanu PF government, gifting lavish cars to musicians while essential services like healthcare remain neglected.
Chivayo’s recent spree of gifting high-end automobiles, including a Mercedes Benz valued at US$140,000 to Aleck Macheso, has drawn criticism from Mapfumo, who perceives it as a stark reminder of the socioeconomic disparities in Zimbabwe.
Speaking with Lance Guma on Nehanda TV, Mapfumo expressed sympathy for the musicians, suggesting they accept these gifts due to financial strain. He questioned the rationale of such extravagant gifts in a country where the majority struggle to make ends meet.

“Why lavish musicians with cars they likely cannot afford, while our hospitals crumble and poverty persists?” he queried.
Mapfumo further rebuffed government spokesperson Nick Mangwana’s suggestion that he was free to return to Zimbabwe, asserting his inherent right to his homeland. He disclosed plans for his final performances in America, England, and Africa before retiring, expressing a desire to support aspiring musicians in Zimbabwe.
“My allegiance lies with the people, not any political faction,” he affirmed. “I aim to impart knowledge to the next generation of musicians before bidding farewell to the stage.”
