The defence attorney for the first murder suspect in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, Thulani Mngomezulu, has passed away. His family confirmed his death in a statement issued on December 10, 2024.
The statement expressed deep sorrow, confirming that Mngomezulu passed away early in the morning at a hospital in Vosloorus. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and son. We ask for your compassion and understanding as we navigate this difficult time and make decisions regarding the coming days. We appreciate your love and support and kindly ask for continued prayers,” the family said.
Mngomezulu had been absent from court for more than a month due to illness. He was representing Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, one of the accused in the 2014 murder of Senzo Meyiwa, who allegedly admitted to being involved in Meyiwa’s death while visiting singer Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus.

Earlier in January 2024, it was reported that Mngomezulu was facing several charges, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and violating a protection order following a domestic dispute with his wife. The charges reportedly stemmed from an incident in November 2022 when Mngomezulu allegedly attempted to burn down his house with his wife and children inside. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had refused to drop the charges despite his wife’s attempts to withdraw them.
