A police officer from Limpopo has been arrested for alleged involvement in a series of insurance fraud schemes. The officer, a Sergeant in the South African Police Service (SAPS), was taken into custody on Thursday morning.
According to National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the Sergeant is accused of fraudulently profiting from funeral, accidental, and life insurance policies issued by various banks and insurers. Investigators believe the scheme began in 2019, with the officer targeting victims known to her, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities or mental challenges.
“She allegedly took out life and funeral policies in their names, making herself the beneficiary,” said Mathe. The officer is currently linked to six insurance-related murders and is believed to have received at least R10 million from these fraudulent claims.
Following months of investigation, a warrant of arrest was obtained and executed at the police station where she worked.
Commenting on the case, Police Minister General Fannie Masemola condemned the Sergeant’s actions, stating that it is a “disgrace” for an officer, entrusted with public safety, to exploit and harm vulnerable people. He added that the arrest sends a strong message that the law will catch up with those involved in criminal activities.
The Sergeant is set to appear in the Polokwane District Court on Friday, facing six counts of murder and 17 counts of fraud.
