A power surge on Sunday evening led to widespread blackouts in both Zimbabwe and Zambia, plunging the two southern African nations into darkness.
Both countries are already facing a severe power shortage, primarily due to the declining water levels at Lake Kariba, a crucial hydroelectric power source for the region.
Zambia’s power utility, ZESCO Limited, reported that the system disturbance occurred shortly after 8 PM on Sunday. ZESCO’s acting managing director, Justin Loongo, stated:
“ZESCO Limited informs the nation that a power system disturbance occurred on 24 November 2024 at 20:15 hours, resulting in a nationwide loss of power supply. The Corporation is working tirelessly to resolve the issue, and efforts to restore power are ongoing. We will continue to update the public on this unforeseen situation. We regret the unplanned outage and appreciate our customers’ patience.”

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
