The State has decided to drop charges against Stanley Musekiwa, the Officer-in-Charge of CID Stores and Business, who was accused of stealing US$45,000 from a stove being used as evidence. Alongside Musekiwa, his alleged accomplices Takaidza Mugwisi and Masimba Stanley Gwasunda were also implicated in the case.
Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje informed the court that the case would no longer proceed due to insufficient evidence. The initial allegations suggested that Mugwisi had recovered US$40,500 from Carlington Gengezha, who was involved in an unlawful entry and theft incident in Belvedere.
Musekiwa, in his capacity as Officer-in-Charge, had entrusted the money to Gwasunda, the Exhibit Officer, with instructions to secure it at CID Homicide Harare. However, instead of storing it in a safe as instructed by Deputy Director Crime CID Zimbabwe, Musekiwa and Gwasunda allegedly concealed the cash inside a stove oven at the CID Stores and Business in Harare.

According to the State, on August 6, Mugwisi was assigned night guard duties at the CID offices, including the exhibit room. Under the cover of darkness due to an electrical fault at Harare Central Police Station, the trio purportedly accessed the office where the money was stored. Allegations further claimed that they staged a break-in by cutting the padlocks with a bolt cutter and proceeded to steal the money from the stove.
Additionally, they were accused of setting the office on fire. However, with the State dropping the charges, the case takes an unexpected turn, leaving unanswered questions about the events surrounding the alleged theft and arson.
